Firstly lets get the bait position correct. Fine tuning the bait mark is very important in carp fishing. You have to make sure you can tell whether the bait is still on the hook or ifit has fallen from the hook. In other words, you have to balance the bait and the float. After adjusting the bait mark on the float, lets's measure the water depth using the rig, andfinally decide on what depth to fish. Having the bait on the bottom of the lake (pond... etc) is key to SOKOZURI.. Lets start of with the basic UEBARI-TONTON rig, whereby the top hook is just touching the bottom.

First add enough weight so that roughly the bottom quater of the float's pole sinks beneath the water. The point where the water comes up to is called the bait mark. When this point bobs up above the water you know you have no more bait on the hook.

Attach the depth measure weight to the hook and cast into the water. The float should disappear beneath the water.

Continually cast the float into the water slowly bringing the float higher until the end of the float just sticks out of the water.

Once you have the float adjusted properly removing the depth measure (weight) will leave your hook just sitting on the bottom.
Choose one point and then continually cast with the weight to measure the area.
